One of the notorious criminals of the city, Khandaker Nayeem Ahmed Teton, also a listed top terrorist, was shot to death by miscreants. He was the brother-in-law of another top terrorist, Sanjidul Islam Emon.

The fatal attack took place around 8:00 PM on Tuesday (April 28) near a banyan tree in front of Dhaka University’s Shah Newaz Hostel in the New Market vicinity in the capital.

Initially, the identity of the deceased could not be confirmed. Later, the police verified his identity through fingerprint analysis. It was confirmed that the victim was Teton, Emon’s brother-in-law.

At around 7:45 PM, several miscreants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire indiscriminately at Teton. They shot him at least five times from close range in various parts of his body, including his head.

Pedestrians rescued Teton and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). The emergency department physician pronounced him dead at 8:27 PM.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Molla Shahadat of New Market Police Station said the deceased was wearing jeans and a printed short-sleeved shirt.

A pedestrian named Md. Jewel, who took the victim to the hospital, said the man was found lying critically injured in front of Shahid Shah Newaz Hall.

An eyewitness to the shooting, a student named Md. Mezbah, said Teton was shot on the road adjacent to New Market Gate no. 1 and Shahid Shah Newaz Hall. After he collapsed on the street, bystanders attempted to chase the attackers, but they managed to flee on their motorcycle.

The 52-year-old Teton had spent more than two decades in prison. He was released following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024. He held significant influence over the criminal underworld in Rayerbazar and Hazaribagh neighbourhoods of the capital and faced multiple charges, including murder and extortion.

Sanjidul Islam Emon, another listed top terrorist, is married to Teton's younger sister. It is widely believed that Teton used to exert influence in the criminal world primarily by leveraging Emon’s power.

During the Awami League's tenure, Teton was granted bail on September 17, 2023. however, he was not released at that time due to legal complications. Like many other listed top terrorists detained in prison, he was released following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.

A senior official of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) stated that Teton failed to appear in court regularly after his release on bail. Due to his absence, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.

In 2002, during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government, a reward was announced for the capture of 23 top terrorists, and Teton was notably one of them.

Inspector Md. Faruk, the officer-in-charge of the DMCH Hospital Police Camp, confirmed that Teton's body is being kept at the hospital’s emergency department morgue. The matter has been formally reported to the New Market Police Station.
