Police have recovered the bodies of five individuals—a woman, her three children, and her brother—from a multi-story building in Rautkona village of Kapasia Upazila, Gazipur.
The woman's husband, Forkan Mia (40), is currently absconding. According to relatives, Forkan called them this Saturday morning to confess that he committed the murders himself.
The killings took place on the ground floor of a house owned by expatriate Md. Monir Hossain in Rautkona village. Various units of the law enforcement agencies, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), are currently working at the scene.
The accused, Forkan Mia, is the son of Md. Atiar Rahman hailing from Mary Gopinathpur village of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila. The deceased have been identified as Forkan Mia’s wife Sharmin Akter (30), daughters Meem Khanam (15), Umme Habiba (8), and Faria (2), and his brother-in-law Rosul Mia (22) from Paikkandi village in Gopalganj Sadar.
Forkan's family had been living in that rented house for about five years. Forkan worked as a private car driver, while his brother-in-law Rosul was employed at a factory in Gazipur Sadar.
The slain Sharmin’s brother, Shahin Molla, stated that about a month ago, Forkan claimed he had rented out his private car to a company for Tk40,500 per month. However, the car was never seen again, and the family received no money. They were unaware whether the car had been sold or if something else had happened to it.
Sharmin’s paternal aunt, Eva Akter, claimed that Forkan called his brother Mishkat and said, "Everything is over for me. I have killed everyone. I haven't left a single family member alive. You won't find me anymore."
She further mentioned that Forkan had called his brother-in-law Rosul Molla on Friday morning, asking him to come to the Kapasia house under the pretext of giving him a job. Rosul arrived at the house around 6:00 PM. Forkan allegedly killed him along with everyone else during the night.
Shahin Molla expressed his suspicion that Forkan might have left the country. He said, "I heard he had prepared a passport to go abroad and his flight was supposedly scheduled for today. I cannot understand why he killed my sister, nieces, and younger brother."
Gazipur Superintendent of Police Md. Sharif Uddin said, "Information has been received that the accused Forkan confessed to the murders over the phone. The incident is extremely tragic. Multiple police teams are working to uncover the motive behind the killings and to arrest the accused."
