Police in Titas upazila of Cumilla have arrested Ballarpur Union Parishad member Abul Kalam Azad on allegations of hanging a banner marking the founding anniversary of the banned activities of the Awami League.

Police conducted an operation at Batakandi Bazar in the upazila on Tuesday at around 7:30 pm and arrested him. Titas Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mominul Haque confirmed the arrest.

Local sources said that on Monday late at night, UP member Abul Kalam Azad hung a political banner in front of a government primary school in his village, Ulukandi, featuring a photo of ousted former Prime Minister and former MP Engineer Abdus Sabor. The image of the banner later went viral on Facebook. After law enforcement agencies took notice of the incident, police immediately launched an operation.

Titas Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mominul Haque said that police are working in a fully impartial manner. He added that no innocent person is harassed without reason, but those involved in specific crimes or who commit offenses will not be spared.
