State Minister of Water Resources Forhad Hossain Azad said the formal inauguration of the Teesta Master Plan work will take place in November 2027.
He made these remarks after inspecting the Mohendranagar drainage canal in Lalmonirhat on Thursday morning.
Forhad added, “We have already talked at the technical level with the neighboring country regarding the Teesta issue. A committee comprised of river experts is working. We have brought the feasibility study of the Teesta to near completion. As soon as the finance minister returns, we will get the approval.
“Along with experts from CEGIS, River Commission officials, and BUET, we are also taking consultations from China, the Netherlands, and Malaysia. A complete DPP (Development Project Proposal) will be prepared by integrating all the consultations. To ensure which method of work will yield the maximum benefit for people, it will take another 8-9 months to prepare this DPP.”
Forhad noted that through this mega project, the long-standing suffering of nearly 3 crore people in five districts - Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari, and Rangpur - will be removed, and their expectations will be fulfilled.
He said, “The prime minister is coming on 19 November, and the canal will be inaugurated by him. As a result, several thousand people in the area will get direct irrigation facilities. Tree plantation will be carried out on both banks of the canal, which will open the door to a new Lalmonirhat.”
