The government has announced financial assistance for the casualties of the head-on collision between two buses in Osmaninagar, Sylhet. Each family of those killed in the accident will receive a grant of 5 lakh taka, those who have been permanently disabled will receive 3 lakh taka, and the injured undergoing treatment will receive 1 lakh taka each.

This assistance will be provided on the instructions of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, said Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury, while visiting the injured at Sylhet's Osmani Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning. During the visit, he inquired about the treatment of the injured and directed hospital authorities to ensure proper medical care for them.

Ariful Haque Chowdhury said that a prescribed form through BRTA has been handed over to the hospital director. After the form is properly filled out and submitted, the concerned individuals will receive the government grant.

Meanwhile, the minister also said that instructions have been given to concerned authorities to control vehicle speeds and stop competitive driving on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway to reduce accidents. He particularly mentioned increasing surveillance on reckless speeding and unnecessary competition among drivers, especially in the morning when the highway is relatively empty.

The minister said that speed control measures, similar to those implemented on flyovers, will be enforced on highways through the Highway Police and administration.

He pointed out that multiple accidents have occurred recently on the Osmani and Tajpur roads, and the administration will take steps to prevent them. He also called for bringing reckless drivers under the law. He said, "People are moving around with such high speeds; for the safety of people's lives and property, I think we need to be stricter in this regard."

In response to a question about frequent accidents on the Sylhet–Sherpur road section, the minister informed that land acquisition for the four-lane Dhaka–Sylhet highway project is nearing completion. Although work has been somewhat delayed due to rain and other factors, he expressed hope that the project work would become visible by September–October.
