A clash broke out between two groups after a protest over the harassment of a teenage girl in Bijoynagar, Brahmanbaria, with allegations of vandalism and looting at five houses. At least 10 people from both sides were injured in the clash.
Bijoynagar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Rajib Chandra Sarkar confirmed the incident. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening.
According to the family and locals, Rakib, son of neighbor Humayun Mia alias Lakhindar, had been harassing the 10th-grade girl for a long time. The family alleged that Rakib proposed marriage to the girl, but her family turned it down. Following a dispute over this issue, the girl’s education was halted, and she was prevented from taking her examinations.
The family alleged that unable to meet the girl, Rakib verbally abused her family members on the road in front of their house. When they protested, an argument broke out between the two sides, which eventually turned into a clash. At least 10 people, including both men and women from both sides, sustained injuries.
Following the clash, Rakib’s relatives launched attacks on five of their houses, vandalizing and looting them. The family claimed that gold ornaments, cash, and a new motorcycle were looted during the attack.
Upon receiving the news, a police team led by Bijoynagar Police Station SI Mahbub rushed to the spot and deployed police to keep the situation under control.
Singerbil Market Committee General Secretary Manik Mia said he, the Union Parishad Chairman and the police, went to the scene.
Singerbil Union Parishad Chairman Monirul Islam Bhuiyan added that he saw the police working to control the situation. Around 10 people from both sides were injured in the incident, and he also witnessed vandalism at several houses.
Rajib noted, “So far, no one has lodged a complaint at the police station. If a complaint is received, legal action will be taken.”
