Former Member of Parliament for Moulvibazar-2 (Kulaura) and Liberation War hero Md. Abdul Matin has died (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un).

He breathed his last at 12 p.m. on Monday at his residence in Mirpur, Dhaka. He was 81 years old. He is survived by his wife, two sons, one daughter, relatives, and a large number of admirers. His sudden death has cast a deep shadow of mourning across Kulaura and the district, with people from political, social, and various professional backgrounds expressing condolences and praying for the eternal peace of his soul.

According to family and political sources, Md. Abdul Matin was born on March 17, 1945, in Kamarkandi village of Jaychandi Union in Kulaura. As a Liberation War hero, he made significant contributions to the country’s independence struggle and was also popular in grassroots politics. He served as the former president of the Kulaura Upazila Awami League and was elected five times as chairman of the Jaychandi Union Parishad. He later served two terms as chairman of the Kulaura Upazila Parishad and was elected Member of Parliament from Moulvibazar-2 constituency in the 10th National Parliament election in 2014. Known for extensive development work in the area, the veteran leader withdrew his candidacy in the 11th National Parliament election in 2018 in support of a Grand Alliance candidate. He remained a senior member of both the district and upazila Awami League until his death.

His nephew, lecturer Md. Abdul Baki Farhad, confirmed his uncle’s death, saying that he passed away at his residence in Dhaka. He had been suffering from various age-related health complications for a long time. The body has been taken to Kulaura. His first funeral prayer will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the field of Navin Chandra Government Model High School, followed by a second funeral at 2 p.m. in his birthplace Kamarkandi village. He will be buried with state honours at a local graveyard after the funeral.
