Police recovered a time bomb-like object, petrol and two circuits from Fakir Lalon Shah’s akhrabari in Kumarkhali, Kushtia on Monday.
Additional Superintendent of Police Faisal Mahmud confirmed the matter. A bomb disposal unit of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrived at the scene and defused them in the morning.
Following the incident, security was increased in akhrabari and its surrounding areas, said Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jamal Uddin.
A three-day congregation of devotees (Sadhusanga), discussion programs, and a rural fair are underway at the akhrabari to mark the 136th death anniversary of Lalon.
In the midst of the event, around 12 am on Sunday, a local tea vendor spotted an abandoned white bag near the water tank beside the main gate of akhrabari. Locals reported that upon opening the bag, the vendor found a bomb-like object wrapped in red tape, two liters of petrol, and two circuit-like objects. He immediately informed the police station and the fair organizing committee.
Upon receiving the information, members of law enforcement agencies, including the police and SRB, arrived at the scene and sealed off the area. During this time, the main gate of akhrabari was closed. Meanwhile, the CTTC in Dhaka was alerted.
Police have not yet been able to confirm who was behind placing the explosives and said investigations are underway.
