Abul Khair Group invests in four closed jute mills

Razzak Jute Industries was shut down for various reasons. As a result, several thousand workers of the jute mill became unemployed. The factory was recently reopened by Abul Khair Group, one of the country’s leading industrial conglomerates. The products manufactured at the jute mill are now also being exported abroad.
Razzak Jute Industries is not the only one. The country’s one of the leading industrial groups has also reopened several other closed jute mills. These are Dahmashi Jute Industries, Faridpur Jute Fibers and Kushtia Jute Industries in Faridpur. The four factories are now producing jute products at full capacity. Abul Khair Group has created employment for 15,000 workers across the four jute mills in Faridpur and Kushtia.
The jute mills have set a target of exporting 80,000 metric tons of jute yarn and jute products annually. Work is underway to achieve an export target of jute yarn worth $1.2 billion or Tk 15 billion by December 2026. These jute products will be exported to Turkey, China and other countries.
Sheikh Shabab Ahmed, Head of Corporate Affairs and Legal at Abul Khair Group, told Agamir Somoy, “Many jute mills in the country’s private sector are currently closed. That is why we started our journey by reopening closed factories instead of setting up new ones. Several thousand workers are now working here. In addition, Abul Khair Group has applied to take over three to four closed jute mills owned by the government.”
An official of the group said the quality of Bangladesh’s jute is quite high. The environmentally friendly product has a “well established market” in various countries around the world. That is why Abul Khair Group decided to invest in jute products. This will not only contribute to improving the livelihoods of jute farmers but also support ongoing efforts to produce higher value-added jute products in the future.
The Chattogram based industrial group Abul Khair Group has around 70,000 employees.
The group has investments in numerous sectors including steel, corrugated iron, cement, powdered milk, tea, tobacco and sanitary products.
In 1953, the late Abul Khair came from Begumganj in Noakhali and started his business in Pahartali in Chattogram. His sons currently run the business.
