The regional preliminary round of the 16th Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad will be held in Chattogram to increase students’ interest in chemistry and prepare them for international competitions.
Around 1,100 students from 19 educational institutions in the Chattogram region will participate in the competition, scheduled to take place at Chattogram College on October 31.
The information was shared at a press conference held at the teachers’ lounge of Chattogram College on Wednesday morning, October 28.
Organized by the Bangladesh Chemical Society, the competition will select students to participate in the national final in Dhaka on November 28. Four students selected from the national competition will have the opportunity to represent Bangladesh at the International Chemistry Olympiad, scheduled to be held in Taiwan from July 19 to 27, 2027.
At the press conference, Professor Dr. Nur K. M. Akbar Hossain, treasurer of the central executive committee of the Bangladesh Chemical Society, said, “It is important to foster curiosity about chemistry among students and improve their subject knowledge and analytical skills instead of relying on memorization.”
Professor Dr. A. K. M. Shamsuddin Azad, regional convener of the 16th Chemistry Olympiad, said international science competitions place greater emphasis on a deep understanding of subjects, analytical abilities and practical skills than on rote memorization.
The one-hour multiple choice question (MCQ) examination will be held next Saturday from 10 am to 11 am. Students must report by 9:30 am. A total of 36 rooms at Chattogram College have been prepared for the examination.
