Football World Cup fever is not limited to jerseys, flags, or social media banter. In Bangladesh, fans are also celebrating the tournament with creatively designed themed cakes made in the colors of their favorite national teams.
Kings Confectionery has once again introduced a variety of World Cup themed cakes, continuing a tradition of more than two decades. The bakery has prepared cakes representing six countries so far, which are being displayed across its showrooms.
As expected, the rivalry between Brazil and Argentina dominates demand. Cakes inspired by Portugal, France, Morocco, and Iran have also been made. Additionally, a special cake design based on the World Cup match ball used in the USA, Mexico, and Canada tournament edition has been created.
According to Kings Confectionery’s Chattogram Assistant Area In-Charge Enamul Haque, Brazil and Argentina-themed cakes are the most popular among customers. Fans often buy them before matches or after their favorite team wins. Following Argentina’s World Cup victory last time, demand for themed cakes remained high for nearly 15–20 days.
Beyond national flags, cakes also feature images of star players such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappé. Designs are customized based on customer preferences. The bakery first began producing such themed cakes during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Sellers say they usually sell 3 to 4 themed cakes per day during the World Cup season, sometimes more. The most common size is 1 kg, though 5 kg custom cakes are also made on order. After Argentina’s previous championship win, a 5 kg Argentina-themed cake was also sold.
The price for a 1 kg cake is set at Tk 3,000, while a mixed-flavor version costs Tk 3,100. The flag designs on top of the cakes are not made with regular cream but with edible white chocolate layers.
Although children are the main customers, excitement among adults also increases significantly during the World Cup. In addition to birthdays and personal celebrations, corporate offices also order these themed cakes.
For bakers, the World Cup is not just about competition, it is an opportunity to turn global football passion into a memorable and creative celebration.
