Police have recovered the hanging body of a Union Parishad (UP) member from Maitbhanga Union in Sandwip, Chattogram. His body was found hanging from the roof of his poultry farm in the union on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Didarul Alam Mamun. He was an Awami League-elected Union Parishad (UP) member of Ward No. 3 of Maitbhanga Union. On Wednesday night, he had watched the World Cup semifinal match between Argentina and England with local residents.
According to police and local sources, no other family members were at home at the time of the incident. Mamun's family members have been living in Chattogram city for a long time.
According to locals, after Zuhr prayers, the imam of a local mosque saw Mamun standing beside the farm while passing by. As it started raining, he left the area. Later, around the time of Asr prayers, the imam again saw him standing in the same place. After the prayers, he went toward the farm and found Mamun hanging there. He then quickly informed people at the mosque, and locals rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
Mosque imam Rasel, who saw Mamun hanging, said, “Mr. Mamun was a very good person and had good relations with everyone in the area. Due to various personal reasons, Mamun had been suffering from mental distress for a long time. He spent most of his time alone.”
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sandwip Police Station Sujon Howlader said police recovered the hanging body from the scene after receiving information. “Primarily, it is being considered a suicide. However, the body has been sent for an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death. The real cause of death will be known only after the autopsy report is received. An unnatural death case in connection with the incident is under process at the police station.”
