Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced a series of strict measures in Cox’s Bazar to combat drug smuggling, human trafficking, and organized crime.

These initiatives include creating a data-driven list of top drug traffickers and crime bosses, special joint force operations, the establishment of two army camps in remote hilly areas of Ukhiya-Teknaf, and reinforced surveillance on both land and water routes.

He made these remarks on Thursday night following a meeting on “Drug Prevention and Law and Order Improvement” organized by the district administration at the Hilldown Circuit House in Cox’s Bazar city.

Salahuddin said drug control is a top government priority, adding that a special task force will prepare an information-based list of the country’s top drug traffickers. Legal action will be taken based on that list.

He clarified that not only the masterminds of the drug trade but also those involved as carriers in smuggling will be identified and brought to justice. Efforts have been initiated to set up joint force camps along critical drug trafficking routes in Cox’s Bazar.

Moreover, navy and coast guard patrols will be intensified to block drug smuggling via river and sea routes.

To control waterborne drug trafficking, a decision has been made to make the registration of all fishermen and vessels in Teknaf and Ukhiya mandatory.

This measure will allow for the easy identification of vessels and individuals operating on the waterways, making the activities of law enforcement agencies more effective in preventing smuggling.

Salahuddin also announced plans to bring maritime vessels under the surveillance of 11 observation towers.

To bolster security in Rohingya refugee camps, the CCTV camera system will be made fully operational. Initiatives will also be taken to identify and prosecute those involved in drug trafficking and various other crimes within the camps.
