The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has pledged a grant of around Tk 120 crore to modernise waste management in Chattogram city. If the funding is secured, more than 50 modern vehicles will be purchased for waste collection and transportation. Equipment required to construct a new sanitary landfill will also be procured.
The information was disclosed at a meeting between a JICA delegation and Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Administrator Dr Shahadat Hossain at the CCC Nagar Bhaban on Wednesday.
The meeting was informed that the Japanese government had already approved a feasibility study for the proposed grant project. A team of experts from JICA headquarters will visit Chattogram in December to conduct the study. A decision on final project approval will be made based on the findings of the study.
For the construction of a new sanitary landfill, CCC has acquired 28 acres of land in the Fateyabad-Nandirhat area south of the University of Chittagong. The land consists of two adjacent plots, one measuring 18 acres and the other 10 acres.
JICA Bangladesh Senior Representative Hideki Osawa said JICA’s technical team was working with CCC to prepare the design and bill of quantities (BOQ) to expedite the preparation of the Development Project Proposal (DPP) for the construction of the new sanitary landfill.
CCC Administrator Dr Shahadat Hossain assured the delegation of all necessary cooperation in conducting the feasibility study. Alongside the construction of the new landfill, he also sought JICA’s technical assistance in managing and improving CCC’s existing landfills.
CCC Chief Conservancy Officer Captain Shamim Mohammad Khan, Chief Engineer Md Anisur Rahman, JICA Bangladesh Programme Manager Md Abdullah Bin Hossain, and members of JICA’s expert team Takatoshi Arai, Hirofumi Miyoshi, Satoshi Higashinakagawa and Engineer Golam Sarwar attended the meeting.
