An allegation of result manipulation has been raised against the Chattogram Education Board after a student was declared passed despite receiving zero marks in two subjects in his examination answer scripts. Marks in the creative sections of 11 papers were increased to alter the student’s results. A case has been filed against the student and three employees of the Chattogram Education Board’s Computer Section.

The case was filed on Thursday at Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram city by the board’s Secretary, Professor Mohammad Zahirul Haque Swapan.

The accused are student Hasibul Ali Shovon and three employees of the board’s Computer Section: Imtiaz Ahmed Chowdhury, Rashedul Islam and Noor Hossain Raihan.

The accused student, Hasibul Ali Shovon, took this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination from Agrabad Government Colony High School in the science group.

According to the allegations, there were significant discrepancies between the marks obtained in the examination answer scripts and those published in the results. Although the student failed in 10 subjects, his marks were altered and he was declared passed in the final results. He was awarded a GPA of 4.94.

According to the case statement, the student obtained 23 marks in Bangla First Paper, but the published result showed 33. In Bangla Second Paper, his marks were increased from 24 to 62. In English First Paper, they were changed from 33 to 83, while in English Second Paper, they were increased from 20 to 82.

In addition, his marks in Mathematics were changed from 9 to 66, Islamic Studies from 7 to 64, Higher Mathematics from zero to 46, Physics from zero to 45, Biology from 1 to 46, and Bangladesh and Global Studies from 4 to 65.

Education Board Secretary Professor Mohammad Zahirul Haque Swapan said discrepancies between the marks found in the student’s answer scripts and those published in the results were detected during a re-evaluation of the scripts. The education board subsequently launched an internal investigation into the matter. The investigation revealed similar irregularities in several other subjects.

Under the Public Examinations (Offences) Act, 1980, the student’s results have been withheld before his admission to college. After a report was submitted to the ministry, instructions were given to file a case. Following those instructions, a case was filed at Panchlaish Police Station.

Panchlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozammel Haque said a case had been filed against four people, including three education board employees. The matter is under investigation.

The SSC examination results were published nationwide on August 10. From August 11 to August 17, students were allowed to apply for re-evaluation of their answer scripts through text messages sent from mobile phones.

Earlier, allegations emerged that Professor Narayan Chandra Nath, then secretary of the Chattogram Education Board, had manipulated his son’s results in the 2023 Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination to secure a GPA of 5. His son, Nakshatra Dev Nath, sat for the HSC examination that year from a private college in the city. Several teachers later raised questions about his results. Following the allegations, the Ministry of Education formed an investigation committee.

Based on the investigation committee’s report, the Chattogram Education Board canceled Nakshatra Dev’s results on October 24, 2024. Professor Narayan Chandra Nath was also arrested in connection with the incident.
