The Bangladesh Bank website has resumed operations after four days. It was restored at 8 a.m. on Sunday (October 25).

Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan said the website had been taken offline on Thursday for urgent security reasons. It was restored after a risk assessment.

The central bank’s website had been inaccessible since the evening of October 22. Visitors attempting to access it were shown a message in English stating that maintenance work was underway.

Speaking to central bank officials, it was learned that the relevant technical experts were working to identify and address security vulnerabilities in the website. For the same reason, the websites of several PHP based banks had also been temporarily shut down.

Hackers can exploit PHP security vulnerabilities to remotely execute unauthorized commands on servers without passwords. This can put server files, databases and sensitive information at risk.

To address such risks, various government institutions in France, the Netherlands and Belgium have also taken precautionary measures.

Officials of the government’s Aspire to Innovate (a2i) project said approximately 36,500 websites under the National Portal Framework were not built using the PHP programming language.
