Government has warned of taking action if LPG businessmen do not withdraw their announced two-day strike.

Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku and Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir confirmed the matter during a media briefing at the Secretariat at 10:30 am on Wednesday, following a meeting with LPG operators.

Muktadir said the government wants to send a clear message following the threat of a strike at the dealer level. If anyone manipulates essential commodities or acts against the public interest, the government will take strict action. The crisis would be resolved through discussion, but the government will not tolerate any attempt to hold the country hostage.

Iqbal added that the government wants to keep LPG prices at a tolerable level. Increasing prices through strike attempts will not be tolerated. Calling for the withdrawal of the upcoming two-day strike, he cautioned that action will otherwise be taken.

Noting that the government does not provide subsidies on LPG, Iqbal mentioned that subsidy is provided in this sector in India.

Earlier on 12 October, LPG gas businessmen announced a nationwide closure of all LPG shops on 15 and 16 October. Selim Khan, president of the organization, made the announcement during a press conference at the National Press Club on that day. He warned that an indefinite strike would be called after the two days if their demands are not met.

The businessmen’s demands consist of seven points, including increasing distributors’ commission and ending fines and harassment by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection and executive magistrates.

On 4 October, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) increased the price of a 12-kg cylinder by Tk 252, setting it at Tk 1,837. However, it is not available at the fixed price anywhere, as sellers are arbitrarily charging Tk 400-500 extra. LPG operators said they are selling LPG gas to distributors at the government-fixed price without taking any extra money.

Earlier, the government was also active regarding the crisis. During a meeting at the Energy Ministry on 28 September, operators informed the minister that there is no LPG shortage in the country.

On 30 September, Iqbal instructed deputy commissioners to investigate artificial shortages and sales at exorbitant prices. Muktadir was also present at a meeting with importers on 3 October.

Previously on 8 January, businessmen halted LPG supply and sales across the country in protest against administrative drives and fines. That strike was withdrawn on the same afternoon following a meeting with BERC and assurances that their demands would be fulfilled.
