In the proposed 2026–27 national budget, a Tax Identification Number (TIN) has been made mandatory for the registration of motorcycles above 150cc. Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the proposal while presenting the budget in Parliament on Thursday.
Under the theme “Journey Towards a Democratic, Humane and Inclusive Economy,” the proposed national budget for FY 2026–27 has been set at Tk 938,000 crore, equivalent to 13.7% of the country’s GDP. The budget is Tk 148,000 crore higher than the current fiscal year’s budget.
The government plans to increase development spending while comparatively reducing operational expenditures in the next fiscal year, aiming to place greater emphasis on development activities.
The proposed budget allocates Tk 300,000 crore for the Annual Development Programme (ADP), bringing total development expenditure to Tk 316,075 crore. Meanwhile, Tk 621,925 crore has been proposed for operational and other expenditures.
The government is gradually increasing the share of development spending in the budget. Accordingly, development expenditure is proposed to rise to 33.70% next fiscal year, up from 27.27% in the revised budget of the current fiscal year. At the same time, the share of operational expenditure is proposed to decline from 72.73% to 66.30% of total spending.
