The 2026 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund officially began today, Monday, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand. Bangladesh has joined finance ministers, central bank governors, and economic policymakers from 191 countries at this major international conference. The Bangladeshi delegation is led by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

During the weeklong conference, which runs through October 18, high-level meetings will take place with top officials from both global financial institutions. Key agenda items for Bangladesh include discussions on a new $4.5 billion loan program as well as an outline for overall economic and banking sector reforms.

According to sources in the Ministry of Finance, the conference will prioritize initiatives aimed at restructuring Bangladesh's banking sector, boosting domestic revenue collection, and achieving long-term economic stability.

Key focus areas for Bangladesh include:

New $4.5 Billion Loan Program: Final-stage discussions and negotiations are underway with the IMF regarding a new three-year loan program.

Banking and Revenue Sector Reforms: Support from the World Bank and IMF is being sought to address weaknesses in the banking sector through restructuring, strengthen revenue collection reforms, and adopt sustainable policies to tackle energy challenges.

Presenting a Custom Reform Agenda: Bangladesh will highlight its own economic reform agenda, taking into account the broader national economic context while safeguarding domestic development priorities.

Conference Security and Facilities: Security and modern logistics have been significantly enhanced across the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. Strict surveillance and world-class press center facilities, dining options, and operational infrastructure are in place to accommodate approximately 15,000 international delegates.

A recent World Bank economic report urged Bangladesh to strengthen its banking sector and expand domestic revenue capacity. The Bangladeshi delegation remains optimistic about presenting its financial and budgetary challenges to international development partners at the Bangkok summit to secure progress on new funding.
