Some 739 workers and employees of four factories under Keya Group at Jarun area of Konabari in Gazipur city have been laid off by the authorities.

The layoff notices were posted at the entrances of the factories Monday night. When the workers came to join their work on Tuesday morning, they saw the notices. The laid off establishments are Keya Group's Knit Composite Division, Spinning Division, Cotton Division, and Keya Yarn Mills Limited.

In the notice issued by the factory authorities, it was cited that the establishments had been under lay-off since June 6 due to banking complications and the inability to pay gas bills. The lay-off period was subsequently extended several times. The notice, signed by the chairman and managing director of the factory, further said that a decision had been taken to cut production and administrative costs due to banking complications, gas line disconnection because of unpaid gas bills, and excess manpower than required. For this reason, some positions in various sections, departments, and divisions have been abolished. The factory authorities also stated that all dues of the laid-off workers would be paid in accordance with the country's labor law. Superintendent of Police Mohammad Amjad Hossain of Gazipur Industrial Police, said, that 739 officers and employees of the four establishments of Keya Group have been laid off. To keep the law and order normal, industrial police have been deployed at the main gates of the factories.
