Rooppur power to join national grid in October

Russian Ambassador at a meeting with the FBCCI administrator on Wednesday

Electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will be supplied to the national grid next month, Russian Ambassador Alexander Khozin has said.

He said, “Nearly 4,000 Russian specialists are working tirelessly to quickly resolve the technical issues at the Rooppur power plant. The target is to supply the first 300 megawatts of electricity to the national grid within next month.”

He made the remarks during a meeting with FBCCI Administrator Md. Fazlul Hoque at the organisation’s office in Gulshan on Wednesday afternoon, September 16.

During the meeting, the ambassador also said the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry has proposed forming a joint Russia Bangladesh Business Council to further strengthen trade, investment and economic cooperation between the two countries. The organisation also announced plans to organise a Russia Bangladesh Business Forum in Moscow.

He said an official announcement on forming the joint Business Council may come at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission scheduled to be held in Dhaka in early November.

During the meeting, the Russian ambassador said the initiative to organise the B2B forum in Moscow was taken to create opportunities for direct communication between businesspeople from the two countries. Specific business meetings will be arranged there based on the interests of Bangladeshi businesspeople.

At the meeting, FBCCI Administrator Md. Fazlul Hoque placed special emphasis on the readymade garment sector as well as pharmaceuticals, leather and leather products, jute and ceramics and the export of Bangladeshi human resources to Russia.

In response, the Russian ambassador said the Russian Health Ministry is reviewing the legal and procedural aspects of importing generic medicines from Bangladesh. He also said there is good demand in Russia for shoes and leather products suitable for extremely cold weather. Besides, around 3,000 Bangladeshis have recently been issued visas as opportunities have emerged in the agriculture, fisheries, shipbuilding and services sectors.
