Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) said the work to restore power supply is underway and it will return to normal in the remaining areas within a short time.
BPDB Chairman Rezaul Karim confirmed the matter in a press release and added that power supply has already been turned on in most areas.
Earlier, electricity suddenly shut down in various areas of eastern Dhaka and parts of Chattogram at 12:43 pm on Tuesday. People suffered and activities were disrupted in offices, courts, business establishments, and residences.
Around 2:30 pm, Rezaul told Agamir Somoy that power supply has stopped because the Meghnaghat-Haripur national grid line went out of order.
Among the areas where power supply was cut off are various eastern areas of Dhaka, including Bhulta, Haripur, Siddhirganj, Gulshan, Rampura, Ulon, and Motijheel. Power supply was also shut down in a portion of Chattogram.
The national power grid is under the direct control of the National Load Dispatch Centre (NLDC). However, Power Grid Bangladesh said electricity supply remains normal in other areas of the country, including the northern region.
According to power sector experts, if a fault occurs in the national grid, power plants may automatically shut down one after another for protection. Following such a disaster, it may take up to several hours to normalize the full power supply.
