The fair authorities filed a case against unidentified individuals over the vandalism of the gate and several stalls at the old Trade Fair ground in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.

On Thursday evening, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station OC Monirul Islam confirmed the matter. The case alleges that goods worth Tk 30-35 lakh were damaged.

On Wednesday morning, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) students took out a procession and went there demanding the reclamation of the field. At one point, they vandalized a gate and stalls constructed for the Asia International Fair.

Recently, an announcement was made to move the Secretariat and relocate it to the old Trade Fair ground in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Witnesses said students gathered in front of the university’s flag stand on Wednesday morning. Later, they took out a procession, went to the old Trade Fair ground, and chanted various slogans. At one point, the fair gate and stalls on the field were vandalized.

The students added that they had told the authorities on Tuesday to remove the fair and had also set a deadline for it. However, seeing no progress within the specified time, they went to the field and demonstrated. They will continue the movement until the field is returned.

Yousuf Sardar, who is involved in the construction of stalls for the Youth Fair, informed that they were constructing the stalls with government permission. If there is any objection regarding the fair ground, the government will handle that. But why were the stalls vandalized? - he raised this question. Yousuf also alleged that after the vandalism, the students took away the stall construction equipment.

Earlier, work on soil testing (soil quality test) was underway at the field for setting up the Secretariat. Around noon, SAU students went there with a protest procession. Later, they took the soil testing equipment and two vehicles to the campus.
