Government wants Meta to open office in Bangladesh
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam holds a meeting with Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan
Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed Islam has called on Meta to open an office in Bangladesh.
She made the call during a meeting with Meta Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan on Wednesday, September 23, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
During the meeting, the state minister stressed the need to prevent online abuse and digital harassment. She also discussed the proposed Cyber Security Act in Bangladesh.
The state minister highlighted Meta ‘s large number of users in Bangladesh during the meeting. They also discussed Meta ‘s relationship with Bangladesh and various issues related to digital platforms.
The meeting also discussed opportunities to strengthen Bangladesh ‘s digital economy and e-commerce ecosystem. Particular focus was placed on how Meta ‘s platforms and technologies can support businesses, entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprises and digital commerce in Bangladesh.
Prime Minister ‘s Adviser Rehan Asif Asad, Bangladesh ‘s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Irene Khan and Deputy Permanent Representative A.K.M. Wahiduzzaman were also present at the meeting.
