Jamaat-e-Islami Member of Parliament Abdul Muntakim has come under criticism after claiming to be the child of a freedom fighter.
He later expressed regret for the statement, describing it as an unintentional error.
During a speech in parliament on 14 June, Muntakim called himself the son of a freedom fighter. Footage of his remarks quickly went viral on social media, triggering widespread debate and criticism.
It later emerged that his parents, Abdul Kader Syedi and Mosolman Begum, are both alive and live with him in Syedpur, Nilphamari.
When questioned about the comment, Muntakim admitted the mistake, explaining that incorrect wording had been used during his address.
His election affidavit complicates the matter. According to the affidavit, he was born on 10 January, 1981 - nearly ten years after the Liberation War ended. The same document explicitly lists his father and mother as living.
