Teenager who got out of car that ran over worker in Baridhara arrested

A teenager who got out of the private car that ran over a construction worker in Dhaka’s Baridhara has been arrested by police after he was initially released amid widespread discussion over the incident.
The 16-year-old was arrested from his home in Gulshan this afternoon, Gulshan Police Station Officer in Charge Abu Zayed Md Nazmun Nur confirmed to Agamir Somoy on Wednesday evening.
The private car ran onto the sidewalk in Baridhara on Tuesday and ran over construction worker Mehedi Hasan (24), who was sitting there. Witnesses and a video circulated on social media showed that the teenager was in the driver’s seat of the car at the time of the incident.
Locals detained the teenager at the scene and handed him over to police. However, police later released him.
Gulshan Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Ismail Hossain had said the teenager was released because his name was not included in the case filed by Muktadir Islam, the elder brother of deceased Mehedi.
According to Gulshan police sources, the teenager is an O Level student at an English medium school in Dhaka’s Gulshan area. His father is a captain at Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The private car involved in the accident is registered in his mother’s name.
Akash Marker has been named as the driver of the car and accused in the case. However, he is on the run.
