Bangladesh has signed an agreement with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to implement a project managing displacement caused by climate change in South Asia.

According to a press release from the IOM, the agreement was finalized on Thursday at the Economic Relations Division (ERD).

ERD Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky and IOM Chief of Mission Laura Tom Bonde officially signed the project agreement.

Funded by the European Union (EU), the three-year project will see an investment of € 1.25 million for its execution in Bangladesh.

IOM said under the project, efforts will focus on gathering data on climate-displaced populations and exchanging research-based knowledge regarding displacement management among South Asian nations.

Moreover, the initiative will involve non-resident Bangladeshis in climate risk management, bolster the climate resilience of local communities, and foster regional cooperation to address climate risks.

The signing ceremony was attended by ERD Additional Secretary AKM Sohel, Joint Secretary Kazi Shahjahan, Senior Assistant Secretary Rajibul Alam, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Joint Secretary Fahmida Haque Khan, IOM National Program Officer Ashfakur Rahman Khan and National Consultant SM Morshed.
