Communist Party of China (CPC) International Department Minister Liu Haixing paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday.

PM’s Press Wing confirmed the matter and said Liu conveyed the greetings of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Tarique during the meeting. In response, Tarique also extended greetings to Xi and Premier Li Qiang.

Liu added, “During Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to Beijing, a joint declaration of a new era of future bilateral relations between the two countries was issued.”

He noted that China’s support for Bangladesh’s development and progress will continue. He expressed hope that China’s commitment to Bangladesh remains unchanged and that bilateral relations between the two countries will deepen and strengthen further in the future.

He also expressed confidence in the potential for Bangladesh’s economic growth and development under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Tarique said, “The foundation of Bangladesh-China relations was laid during the time of former president Ziaur Rahman. For a long time, this relationship has held a special place in the hearts of the people of both countries.”

He added that maintaining the continuity of this historical relationship and carrying it forward to future generations is now their responsibility. He expressed hope that this tradition of friendship and cooperation between the two nations will advance further through the hands of the new generation.

Tarique noted that following Ziaur Rahman’s visit to China, the canal digging program began in Bangladesh, which later gained popularity and contributed significantly to agricultural development.

The government has also taken an initiative to dig 20,000 kilometers of canals, which will benefit farmers and ordinary citizens while playing a crucial role in protecting biodiversity and environmental balance.

Both sides emphasized enhancing party-level communication and cooperation between the CPC and the BNP. Liu said China is interested in expanding and diversifying relations between the two parties into a multidimensional framework. At that time, he extended an invitation to a delegation led by the BNP Secretary General to visit China.

During the meeting, discussions also touched upon the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor. Liu conveyed China’s support for Bangladesh’s inclusion in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

During the meeting, Tarique highlighted the pressure created on Bangladesh’s economy, society, demographics, and environment due to the long-standing presence of 13 lakh Rohingya refugees.

He sought China’s cooperation in resolving this crisis. In response, Liu said China is well aware of the Rohingya crisis and assured that he will convey the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s concerns regarding this matter to Chinese President.

During the meeting, the Chinese side stressed continuing cooperation in Bangladesh’s development while also prioritizing increased communication between the political parties and the peoples of both nations.

Present during the meeting were BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP Vice Chairman Air Vice Marshal (retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, and State Minister of Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam.

Accompanying Liu Haixing were Liu Yuyin, charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, and Peng Xiubin, director general of the Bureau of Southeast and South Asian Affairs of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, among others.
