Dinesh Trivedi calls Tarique Rahman ‘wonderful’ person

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi called Prime Minister Tarique Rahman a wonderful person, expressing hope for his visit to India and saying that all problems between the two countries could be resolved once the two prime ministers meet.

The Indian high commissioner made the remarks while answering questions from journalists after meeting Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan at the Secretariat on Wednesday. However, he said no date had been set for the Bangladeshi prime minister’s visit to India.

Since Tarique Rahman assumed office as prime minister in February, there has been discussion about his visit to India. It was hoped that the visit would help thaw relations between Dhaka and New Delhi.

Meanwhile, after Tarique Rahman did not attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi last month, new discussions emerged about tensions in Dhaka New Delhi relations. There has also been discussion that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s various activities from Delhi are affecting the situation.

Against this backdrop, journalists asked the Indian high commissioner about the issue when they met him at the Secretariat on Wednesday.

Dinesh Trivedi said, “I have met Tarique Rahman. He is a wonderful person.”

The Indian high commissioner said he had also spoken to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after meeting Tarique Rahman.

“The mindset of the two leaders is the same. There are challenges and there will be challenges. Despite that, when they sit together, there is no question that cannot be resolved. I am extremely optimistic.”

Trivedi said he hoped the two prime ministers would meet at the right time and that there was no need to rush. He said the people of both countries also want such a meeting.

Asked when the meeting would take place, he said, “There has been no discussion about fixing a date. There has been no discussion about a month either. But it will happen.”

Describing the environment as “extremely positive,” the Indian high commissioner said both leaders need to be given time for this.
