Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has described those who sacrificed their lives during the July uprising as the nation's best sons. He said the movement succeeded due to the unity of students and the masses, as well as the active role played by politicians.
He made these remarks while addressing a discussion program titled "Eternal July," organized by the Dhaka College unit of Chhatra Dal on Wednesday.
The event commemorated the martyrs and the wounded of the anti-autocracy movement over the past 17 years and the July mass uprising.
Sheikh Rabul Alam claimed that at the start of the July movement, the current Prime Minister Tarek Rahman had entrusted him with the responsibility of the movement's chief coordinator. He said he carried out that duty with dedication and worked to energize the movement.
He also stated that from the beginning to the end of the movement, the country's politicians stood by the students and the masses, risking their own lives. He credited the active cooperation of politicians and the united participation of students and the public for the movement's success.
Sheikh Rabul Alam alleged that some individuals who were not seen on the ground during the July movement are now claiming to have been its key leaders. However, he noted that the public had already given their verdict through elections.
He further said that the people know in whose hands the state is safe and who stands by them in times of crisis. Therefore, he said, it is not possible to mislead the public.
The event was attended by leaders and activists of the Dhaka College Chhatra Dal unit, the principal of Dhaka College, teachers, students, and guests from various levels.
