The Naval Police have recovered the body of former Bangladesh Air Force Flight Lieutenant Tahsif Souri from the Turag River.
The body was recovered at around 4:45 pm on Wednesday from the Rajabari river landing area under Uttarkhan Police Station in the capital, two days after he went missing.
Members of Uttarkhan Police Station and the Naval Police took custody of the body.
Mohammad Firoz Uddin, in charge of the Naval Police outpost in the Tongi river port area of Gazipur, shared the information.
He said the body had been sent to a hospital morgue for an autopsy. Further legal action in the case is underway.
The death of the former Air Force officer has sparked widespread concern. Tahsif’s name came into the spotlight over the release of a video showing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country after being ousted from power on August 5, 2024.
After news of his death spread, KSM Intisar Inzimam, a former college and Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA) coursemate of Tahsif, published an emotional post on Facebook.
In the post, he wrote, “Tausif had been missing since he left home the night before last.”
He also noted that although mud was visible on the hands in the photograph of the body, the rest of the body appeared clean.
Inzimam claimed that unless it was clearly established that the death resulted from an accident or a personal dispute, he would consider it a political killing.
He also said that after the August 5 video was leaked, Tausif faced various forms of defamation, but no formal police case had been filed against him.
