Police morale has returned and they are working to curb crime

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the morale of the police has returned. He said they are working to curb crime.

The home minister made the remarks while speaking about the country’s law and order situation at a discussion and prayer meeting held at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan in the capital on Wednesday morning on the occasion of Eid e Milad un-Nabi (PBUH).

Salahuddin Ahmed said, “I sometimes praise the police force and all the disciplined forces. I do so because of the fragile morale and fragile condition in which we found them. Within these six months we have been able to improve their condition. Their morale has returned. They have become committed to curbing crime with their full strength.”

The home minister said, “Six months of the government’s tenure have passed. Since taking responsibility there has not been a single incident or any crime after which the police force was unable to arrest the perpetrators immediately.”

“This is the achievement of the current government,” the minister added.

The home minister said, “The acting secretary general mentioned an incident in Rangpur. Everyone involved in that incident was brought under the law within a reasonable period after the incident took place. Starting from the Ramisa murder to every crime that has been nationally discussed or not discussed, we have been able to address every crime. We have been able to bring them under the proper legal process. We have been able to hand them over to the court.”

“Where necessary we have cooperated to complete judicial proceedings within a short period according to the needs of society. You all know everything. I do not think it is right to expect much more than this within such a short period,” Salahuddin Ahmed added.

In his speech the home minister also pledged to turn the police force into a people friendly force. He said, “I promise that the Bangladesh Police will become a people friendly police force that meets public expectations, Inshallah.”

However, the minister advised people not to be overly optimistic. He said, “None of us can expect a revolutionary change overnight. Under the leadership and guidance of the leader of the people of this country Tarique Rahman, we will be able to improve the law and order situation to such a level, Inshallah, that public expectations will be fulfilled.”

The home minister sought everyone’s cooperation in this regard. He said, “You will all cooperate. At least by providing information and cooperation, you will cooperate with all the forces.”

The home minister said changes are being made to the legal framework of the law enforcement agencies. He said their accountability is being ensured as well as transparency in their activities.

“The policy of curbing the wicked and protecting the righteous is being followed. We are rewarding them, giving them awards and certificates. Medals are being given in various ways for their good work and their meritorious work,” Salahuddin Ahmed added.

BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Chairman’s Advisory Council member Abdus Salam, Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee were among those present at the prayer meeting.
