BNP submits nomination papers for Mirza Fakhrul in presidential election

Nomination papers have been submitted for Bangladesh Nationalist Party BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the presidential election.
Party leaders submitted the nomination papers to Chief Election Commissioner and Election Officer for the presidential election AMM Nasir Uddin at around 2:30pm on Thursday, August 13.
BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan is the proposer of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s nomination, while BNP Standing Committee Member and Dhaka 3 constituency lawmaker Goyeshwar Chandra Roy is the seconder.
Earlier on Thursday, the decision to nominate Mirza Fakhrul as the presidential candidate was finalized at a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee, the party’s highest policy making forum, chaired by Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat at 12:45pm.
As the BNP has an absolute majority in parliament, its candidate is almost certain to become president if a vote is held. However, the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has nominated Oli Ahmed as its candidate.
Recently, Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from the post of president. Then Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed the duties of acting president.
Following Shahabuddin’s resignation, preparations for the presidential election began. The Election Commission announced the election schedule.
According to the schedule, voting will be held from 2pm to 5pm on August 20 in the session hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
