In a case filed over allegations of violence against a woman and abortion, Jisan Mia (28), central assistant international affairs secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir, has been sent to jail by a court in Cumilla.
On Tuesday around 5:30 pm, he was produced before Cumilla Judicial Magistrate Court-3 under tight security by police and the Detective Branch (DB). After the hearing, Judge Tayeb Uddin ordered that he be sent to jail. The matter was confirmed by defence lawyer Monirul Islam Patwary.
Earlier, Jisan Mia, who had been undergoing treatment at Cumilla Medical College Hospital, was discharged on Tuesday afternoon. Hospital authorities said his physical condition was reviewed and he was declared fit. He was discharged around 12 noon after four days of treatment.
Although he was scheduled to be produced before the court earlier in the day, law enforcement officials brought him to court around 5:30 pm.
According to the case statement, Jisan Mia was arrested last Friday night in connection with the alleged rape of a widow in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla and the termination of her foetus. After his arrest, he was admitted to hospital for treatment due to illness, and was not immediately produced before the court.
Earlier, his family claimed that he was found unconscious near Laksham Railway Junction around 9:45 pm on Friday, a day after he went missing from Daudkandi. He was then admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for treatment.
However, Cumilla Superintendent of Police Anisuzzaman stated at a press conference that Jisan was not abducted and that he had gone into hiding on his own.
