Free Train Travel and 25% Metro Rail Discount for Senior Citizens

Citizens aged 65 and above will no longer need to pay any fare for train travel in the country. In addition, they will receive a 25% discount on metro rail fares.
This was announced by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury while presenting the national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year in Parliament on Thursday afternoon.
The finance minister said, “Old age allowances, widow allowances, and deserted women allowances will continue. Senior citizens above 65 years of age will get completely free train travel and a 25% discount on metro rail fares.”
He also added that the government is working to bring all districts under the railway network and expand rail connectivity with seaports and land ports.
He further stated that the “Family Card” program will be gradually expanded nationwide by 2030. In the next fiscal year, 4.1 million women will receive family cards, with an allocation of Tk 145 billion proposed for this purpose.
The number of disability allowance recipients will be increased to 3.8 million, and the monthly allowance will be raised to Tk 1,000. The number of stipends for students with disabilities will be increased to 100,000, with monthly stipends ranging from Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,400 depending on category.
Under the maternal and child support program, 1.895 million mothers and children will receive Tk 850 per month. One-time financial assistance for patients suffering from cancer and five other critical diseases will be increased from Tk 50,000 to Tk 100,000.
