Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced a plan to plant 25 crore saplings across the country over the next five years.
He said responsibility does not end with just planting trees; their maintenance must also be ensured. At the same time, he called upon everyone to work together for canal excavation, environmental conservation, and building a clean Bangladesh.
Tarique made these remarks on Monday morning during a tree-planting program organized in Gournadi, Barishal.
He added that before the election, the government had announced two priority programs: canal excavation and tree planting. These programs were initiated by president Ziaur Rahman and carried forward by former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
In continuation of that legacy, the government has once again launched a nationwide tree-planting campaign.
Tarique mentioned that on his way to Barishal, he saw many people standing on both sides of the road with saplings in their hands. Some were planting them, while others were preparing to do so. He urged everyone to care for the trees with dedication.
Highlighting the impacts of climate change, he noted that five districts, including Chattogram, have experienced heavy rainfall, whereas there was no rain before that.
Sometimes there is excessive rain, and sometimes there is none at all. While weather issues exist worldwide, they are more pronounced in Bangladesh. The intensity of winter is no longer what it used to be, and summer temperatures have risen.
According to the Prime Minister, there is no alternative to massive nationwide tree planting to tackle this situation. He remarked that the number of trees is still insufficient relative to the country’s population.
He said that around 2,500 saplings would be planted. However, he stressed that the care of the saplings after planting is the most important factor. He called upon the families living in front of the houses where saplings are being planted to nurture the trees. He added that as the trees grow, they will not only provide shade or cool air but will also benefit future generations.
Following the tree planting, Tarique sought everyone’s cooperation in creating a clean environment. He said if the country’s canals and water bodies remain functional, water will flow easily and waterlogging will decrease. At the same time, he urged people not to throw trash and waste everywhere.
He shared a personal habit, adding that he keeps even his used tissues with him and later disposes of them in a dustbin. He emphasized the importance of everyone developing this habit.
During the program, the Prime Minister planted neem and coconut saplings and personally tended to them. This was followed by a prayer.
After the event, upon seeing plastic bottles, paper, and cigarette packs lying by the canal, he advised everyone present to be more conscious.
Tarique is later set to participate in another tree-planting program beside the Sagardi Canal in the Trish Godown of Barishal city. In the afternoon, he is scheduled to attend a party organizational meeting at the Shilpakala Academy.
