Tarique, Guterres meet at UN to discuss Rohingya crisis

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a high-level meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss Bangladesh’s priority issues at the United Nations, focusing on a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis, the impacts of climate change, and global peace and security.
The meeting took place on Thursday at the Secretariat Building of the UN Headquarters in New York as part of the prime minister’s participation in the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
During the discussion, both leaders addressed the long-standing cooperative relationship between Bangladesh and the UN, along with vital global, regional, and mutual interest issues.
The talks highlighted Bangladesh’s development trajectory, measures to combat climate change, and a permanent resolution for the Rohingya crisis. Both leaders exchanged views on Bangladesh’s ongoing contributions to UN peacekeeping, security, and development initiatives.
Tarique emphasized the critical necessity of UN support for Bangladesh’s priority areas while reaffirming the nation’s commitment to multilateralism, international cooperation, peace, and sustainable development.
The meeting underscored the necessity of effective international cooperation to achieve a lasting resolution to the Rohingya crisis. Recognizing that Bangladesh has hosted a vast number of Rohingya refugees for a long time and that the root causes of the crisis originate in Myanmar, both leaders stressed the imperative of coordinated international initiatives.
Moreover, discussions addressed the vulnerabilities confronting climate-impacted nations and the urgency of securing climate justice, where Tarique articulated Bangladesh’s strategic position and priorities in mitigating climate impacts.
Guterres emphasized advancing the enduring partnership between Bangladesh and the UN, praising the country’s role in global peace, security, and development.
Concluding the session, both sides affirmed their dedication to sustaining mutual cooperation and working in close partnership to confront common global challenges.
