On the fifth day of the protest demanding the recovery of the old research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, students have begun demolishing various structures built on the field.
They entered the old International Trade Fair ground with a tractor on Monday. Later, after demolishing and removing the shops and other structures built there, the protesters dug up the soil of the field using the tractor.
Earlier, gathering in front of the university’s flag stand, the students marched to the old fair ground. At that time, they chanted various slogans demanding the recovery of the field. Then they entered the field with a tractor and began the work of removing structures.
Demonstrating students said the field is extremely important for the university’s research activities. They have been demanding the reclamation of the field for a long time. However, in the absence of visible progress in implementing their demand, they took the initiative to remove the structures themselves.
The students added that their protest will continue until the research field is fully recovered.
Teachers and students have been demonstrating for a long time protesting the decision to establish the Secretariat on the university’s old research field and demanding the reclamation of the field.
Their demand is that the field must be returned for the university’s research activities and commercial operations there must be halted.
