In the 13th parliamentary election held on 12 February, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the then secretary general of the BNP, was elected as an MP from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency.
Later, Fakhrul was elected as the 23rd President of the country. As a result, the Election Commission (EC) declared the seat vacant.
Following this, the EC organized a by-election in the constituency. In the election held on 29 October, Faisal won with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol, securing 2,27,917 votes. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Delawar Hossain, received 96,513 votes with the Scale symbol.
Faisal won by a margin of 1,31,404 votes. He is the younger brother of Fakhrul. On 31 October, the EC officially published a gazette declaring him the winner.
On the other hand, Reserved Women’s Seat-23 was vacant on 1 October. The seat became vacant following the resignation of Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti, the BNP MP for the reserved women’s seat.
Later, on 12 October, the EC announced the schedule for the by-election in the constituency. According to the schedule, the election date was set for 12 November.
However, since no candidate other than Eliza, the nominee of the BNP and its alliance, remained in the final contest, voting was not required. She submitted her nomination paper on 26 October.
Her nomination paper was declared valid during scrutiny on 27 October. As no candidates withdrew within the designated timeframe, the EC declared her elected uncontested on 2 November and published the gazette notification.
