A court has granted five days of remand for Farhan Shahriar Evan, the youth arrested in connection with the attack on Professor Dr. Mohammad Asadur Rahman, head of the ENT Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Hasib Ullah Piyas passed the order after a hearing on Saturday.

Evan was produced before the court on Saturday. Investigating officer of the case and Sub Inspector of Paltan Model Police Station Md. Atikuzzaman sought a 10-day remand for him. After the hearing the court granted five days of remand. Evan was arrested from his home in Ramganj of Lakshmipur district on Friday.

According to the case statement, Dr. Md. Asadur Rahman had been regularly seeing patients at Pallabi Diagnostic Center in the Shantinagar area under Paltan Model Police Station in the capital for about two months. At around 10 pm on August 17 he finished seeing patients at Pallabi Diagnostic Center. He then left the diagnostic center to go to his home in Mohammadpur.

At around 10:45 pm that night, as soon as he got into a CNG auto rickshaw, five to six unidentified accused along with accused Jibon alias Adil allegedly blocked the vehicle as part of a preplanned attack. They pulled him out of the CNG.

At that time, accused Jibon punched him in the right eye causing a serious bloody injury. The accused allegedly attacked him indiscriminately causing injuries to his head, above both eyes and various parts of his body. Hearing his screams for help, local people arrived and detained Jibon while the other accused fled the scene. Police from Paltan Police Station arrived and took him away.

Earlier, an unidentified person had called his mobile phone and demanded $15,000 in extortion. On August 18, Dr. Md. Asadur Rahman filed a case over the incident.

Meanwhile, doctors held a human chain on Saturday afternoon demanding justice for the attack on Dr. Md. Asadur Rahman. From the human chain at the main gate of Dhaka Medical College, they also demanded an effective national policy to ensure the security of healthcare workers and called for all hospitals to be made safe workplaces.

The BCS Specialist Doctors Forum strongly condemned the attack. The organization demanded the prompt formulation and issuance of an effective national “Healthcare Worker Safety Policy/Guideline” or safety policy to ensure the security of doctors and healthcare workers. It also demanded its implementation at all public and private hospitals across the country.

The demands were raised at a human chain organized on Saturday at the premises of Chittagong Medical College.
