246,000 Yaba pills, foreign pistol and ammunition recovered from border

The Border Guard Bangladesh Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB) recovered 246,000 Yaba pills, a foreign made pistol and five rounds of ammunition during a special operation at the Ghumdhum border in Naikhyangchhari upazila of Bandarban.

The Yaba pills, firearm and ammunition were recovered from an area called Nayapara near Border Pillar 31 on Sunday night.

In a statement, the BGB said that acting on information that drug traffickers were smuggling a large consignment of foreign made weapons, ammunition and Yaba from Myanmar into Bangladesh, a BGB operational team led by Cox’s Bazar Battalion Deputy Commander Major Mehedi Hasan Ashik conducted a special operation in the border area at around 11 PM.

At that time, BGB members saw the smugglers approaching and challenged them. The smugglers then fled, leaving behind one foreign made firearm, five rounds of ammunition and 246,000 Yaba pills. The process of taking further legal action regarding the recovered firearm, ammunition and Yaba is underway.

Cox’s Bazar Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel S M Khairul Alam said, “BGB is equally committed not only to guarding the border but also to preventing drugs and smuggling and recovering illegal firearms. Cox’s Bazar Battalion has been conducting regular operations to prevent various types of illegal activities, including border protection, drug and smuggling prevention. Such effective activities by BGB are further strengthening the sense of security and confidence among people living in border areas. Such operations to protect the border and combat drugs will continue in the future as well.”
