About 50 prison guards summoned over social media posts showing prison interiors

The Directorate of Prisons has taken a tough stance after photos and videos from inside prisons were circulated on social media. About 50 prison guards working at different prisons across the country have been summoned over allegations of sharing such content on Facebook and other online platforms in violation of official restrictions.

They were instructed to appear at the conference room of the Directorate of Prisons at 9 a.m. Sunday. In addition to departmental action against them, the directorate has also launched an investigation to determine the actual cause of the incident.

According to sources, the summoned prison guards, both male and female, are employed at prisons in Rajshahi, Chattogram, Kashimpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Jashore, Barishal, Cumilla, Nilphamari, Gazipur, Manikganj, Narsingdi, Munshiganj and Kashimpur Women's Central Jail, among other correctional facilities across the country.

According to the Prisons Intelligence Unit of the Directorate of Prisons, several prison guards ignored official guidelines on the use of social media and published photos and information from inside prison facilities. The matter has raised concerns over discipline and security in government service. Therefore, it has been decided to seek explanations from those concerned.

Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (Development) Jannat-Ul-Farhad said, “Fifty prison guards have been summoned for posting photos and videos on social media. They will be called in for questioning in phases, and action will be taken against them.”
