Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh wants to work with regional and global partners on the basis of dialogue, partnership, and mutual respect.

He made these remarks on Saturday while speaking at the inaugural session of the international conference “Bay of Bengal Conversation (BOBC) 2026,” organized by the research institute Center for Governance Studies (CGS) in Dhaka.

Tarique added, “Bangladesh wants to create new opportunities by expanding cooperation in various fields including trade, energy, education, technology, and science based on peace and development, alongside protecting national interests and sovereignty.”

Outlining the government’s plans, he announced a plan to construct 20,000 kilometers of canals and waterways over the next five years. Authorities have made progress on the Padma-Spanish project for water conservation and retention, while also preparing a master plan on this matter. These initiatives will support agriculture and boost climate resilience across the country.

The prime minister said, “There is a target to plant 25 crore trees in the next five years. At the same time, increasing the use of solar energy, recycling waste, and encouraging eco-friendly activities are being pursued. Green cities and eco-friendly initiatives can reduce waste as well as increase financial capacity and strengthen the economy.”

During the event, he emphasized protecting human rights, democratic values, and freedom of expression. The rule of law must function equally across every sector, creating a culture where public institutions truly serve the nation’s citizens.

Addressing the Rohingya crisis, Tarique highlighted that Bangladesh shelters nearly 13 lakh Rohingya refugees. Bangladesh’s primary objective remains their swift, voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation, which requires continuous political support and global funding. He stressed that stakeholders must address the root causes of the crisis, noting that the issue originated in Myanmar and its solution must also lie in Myanmar.

Highlighting the importance of the Bay of Bengal, he explained that the sea influences Bangladesh’s future in multidimensional ways. Bangladesh’s strategic location creates opportunities to connect its ports, waterways, and coastal economy with the wider world.

Tarique reiterated that Bangladesh will protect its national interests and sovereignty while working positively with all regional and global partners. Peace and development form the foundation of joint responsibility and progress and citizens will get the benefits if nations advance together through meaningful regional cooperation.
