Police are not the muscle of any particular political party or coterie, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said. He said that to earn public trust, the police must establish themselves as a force that is free from political influence, humane, professional, and service oriented.
He made the remarks on Sunday morning at the graduation parade marking the completion of the first phase of training for probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police of the 27th Bangladesh Civil Service Police Cadre at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi.
The Home Minister said the current government is following a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against corruption. In line with that policy, police officers must perform their duties with honesty, transparency, and dedication. He urged police personnel not to allow any irregularities, corruption, or abuse of power while carrying out their responsibilities.
He said the police are a state institution responsible for ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order. Therefore, they must perform their duties with accountability to the Constitution, the law, and the people, rather than serving the interests of any political party or group. He said public trust would be the police's greatest strength.
Emphasizing the need to strengthen technology-based skills to address the challenges of the digital age, the Home Minister said, “Cybercrime, digital fraud, and technology-based crimes are increasing rapidly. The use of modern technology and enhanced technical skills are essential to combat these crimes.” He also called on police personnel to develop themselves as friends and servants of the people.
Salahuddin Ahmed also said, “During the previous government, the police force suffered in various ways. To recover from that situation and restore public confidence, there is no alternative to professionalism, neutrality, and humane behavior.”
Urging police personnel, he said, “The highest priority must be given to ensuring that no one suffers harassment while seeking services. You must work sincerely to fulfill the new expectations that have emerged through the student public mass uprising.”
The ceremony marked the completion of the six-month basic training of the probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police of the 27th Bangladesh Civil Service Police Cadre. The training began on February 1, and 58 probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police entered their professional careers through the graduation parade.
After receiving the parade salute as the chief guest, the Home Minister presented awards to trainees who achieved distinction in different categories.
Among the trainees, Dr. Md. Nurul Huda Bhuiyan received the Best Probationer and Best in Field Activities awards. Abu Numan Mohammad Khairul Islam received the Best Academic Award. ABM Mamun was named Best Shooter.
Special guests at the closing ceremony included Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu, Inspector General of Police Ali Hossain Fakir, and Bangladesh Police Academy Principal Additional Inspector General of Police GM Azizur Rahman. Dr. Md. Nurul Huda Bhuiyan served as the parade commander.
