Protesters once again blocked roads in Dhaka’s Mirpur area, demanding justice over the brutal rape and murder of child Ramisa. They chanted various slogans calling for a speedy trial and the maximum punishment, death penalty, for the accused.
The protesters started gathering at the Mirpur-10 roundabout after Friday prayers today. Later, they chanted different slogans demanding the execution of the accused.
“We gathered here demanding the execution of the accused. We came seeking justice for the injustice committed against our little sister,” one of the protesters told Agamir Somoy.
Expressing hope that justice would also be served in similar incidents from the past, he said, “We hope the previous cases will also see justice. Since Prime Minister Tariq Rahman and the home minister have given assurances, we expect a fair trial.”
A 27-year-old woman participating in the protest said, “I have been involved in such movements since the 2018 Safe Roads Movement. But in my 27 years of life, I have never seen justice delivered in a rape case. Because there is no justice, rapists move around with a ‘don’t care’ attitude. After six months or a year, they secure bail and get released. That is why we must focus on closing the loopholes in the law.”
Another female protester said, “We will continue the movement until justice is served. In fact, we no longer ask for justice. When have we ever received justice by asking for it? At least 500 children fall victim to such crimes every year. How long are we supposed to wait for justice?” she questioned.
She stressed, “We do not recognize anything as justice except execution. We only want the rapists to be hanged.”
Earlier on Thursday evening, protesters blocked the road from Mirpur-10 to Mirpur-12 in the capital, demanding justice over the rape incident. The blockade halted traffic on the road for a long period, causing severe congestion.
