City Corporation Administrators Unfit to Be Mayors

Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan

NCP spokesperson and Dhaka South City Corporation mayoral candidate Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan has said that administrators of the two Dhaka city corporations are running election campaigns using public funds from the state treasury.

He made the remarks on Tuesday afternoon at Hossain Ali High School in Nakhalpara, where a tree distribution program was underway in Dhaka North City Corporation, organized by NCP mayoral candidate Ariful Islam Adeeb. The week-long program was arranged by the Environment and Climate Cell of NCP Dhaka North on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Former adviser Asif Mahmud said the NCP has placed a five-point demand. “They (the two city administrators) cannot contest elections while sitting in office. They are polluting the city by putting up thousands of posters. Even cattle markets have been set up in residential areas and metro station premises. This mismanagement proves they are not qualified to become mayors,” he said.

He added that rallies of the Awami League are taking place in various areas, calling it a failure of the Ministry of Home Affairs, as all activities of the party have been banned.

Asif Mahmud also said the NCP is preparing to contest local government elections independently. However, he noted that a final decision on joining any electoral alliance will be taken after discussions with relevant parties following the announcement of the election schedule.

At the same time, NCP leaders said the two city administrators cannot remain in office on moral grounds. They alleged that the administrators are running election campaigns using public funds and city corporation resources.

NCP senior joint convener and Dhaka North mayoral candidate Ariful Islam Adeeb said the two administrators have failed in performing their duties. He said they have not succeeded in managing sacrificial animal markets, waste removal, or reducing public suffering. He further alleged that they are using city corporation funds, logos, and manpower to campaign as mayoral candidates, which makes their continuation in office morally unacceptable.

NCP Dhaka North senior joint convener Saiful Islam, joint convener Wahid Alam, joint member secretary Abu Bakar, and assistant organizing secretary Nur Amin Khan were present at the program, which was conducted by joint member secretary Abu Bakar.
