A gang of thieves stole Tk 780,000 from a customer’s money bag kept in front of the cash counter at a Sonali Bank branch in Brahmanbaria.
The incident took place Monday morning at Sonali Bank’s Brahmanbaria Corporate Branch. The incident has caused panic among ordinary customers.
According to eyewitnesses and bank authorities, a customer went to the bank at around 11 am to deposit Tk 780,000. He left the bag of money in front of the cash counter and sat at a nearby table to fill out the deposit voucher. At that time, a member of the gang cleverly took the money bag from the counter and left the bank.
Several members of the gang reportedly entered the bank posing as customers. After being informed of the incident, police visited the scene.
Mohammad Shariful Haque, head of Sonali Bank’s Brahmanbaria Corporate Branch, said the customer had left the money bag in front of the counter while filling out the voucher. As the customer was not watching the money at that time, the gang cleverly took the bag and left the bank. He said the unwanted incident occurred because of the customer’s negligence.
He further said police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the members of the gang.
