Electricity supply has suddenly been disrupted in eastern parts of the capital, Dhaka, and some areas of Chattogram. The disruption occurred on Tuesday afternoon. The exact cause of the outage is not yet known. Power Grid Bangladesh PLC is working to restore electricity supply.

Officials said the unexpected disruption occurred at 12:43 pm. Several areas in eastern Dhaka, including Bhulta, Haripur, Siddhirganj, Gulshan, Rampura, Ullon and Motijheel, were left without electricity. Power supply has also been disrupted in part of Chattogram.

Power Grid Bangladesh said engineers were working in phases to restore electricity supply. The national power grid is currently under the control of the National Load Dispatch Center (NLDC).

The organization also said electricity supply remained operational and normal in other areas of the country, including the northern region.

However, no official has yet commented on the cause of the disruption or where it originated.

People familiar with the power sector said a fault in the national grid could cause power plants to shut down one after another. In such circumstances, it could take several hours to fully restore electricity supply.

Bangladesh has experienced major national grid failures in the past. On October 4, 2022, a grid failure began in the eastern region at 2:05 pm. As a result, a large part of the country, including Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet and Mymensingh, was left without electricity.

On that occasion, power supply was gradually restored across affected areas within three to eight hours. Later, two officials of the Power Grid Company were temporarily suspended over allegations of negligence in their duties.

Earlier, on November 1, 2014, the entire country was without electricity for nearly 12 hours.
