Former deputy literature secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League’s central committee Falguni Das Tanni and Chhatra League activist Sohan have been placed on five-day remand in a case filed over an anti-government procession in Gulshan in the capital.
The order was issued by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam after a hearing on Wednesday.
The remand hearing began in court in the presence of the accused. State prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon presented arguments in favor of remanding them. Defense lawyers including Shariful Islam sought bail and cancellation of the remand petitions.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted five days of remand for each of the two accused.
Tanni was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on October 22. Sohan was arrested in the Mirpur area on the night of October 24. Applications seeking seven days of remand for Tanni and Sohan were filed on October 23 and October 25, respectively.
According to the case allegations, leaders and activists of various affiliated organizations of the banned Awami League and members of the banned Chhatra League gathered in Gulshan on September 11 to undermine the government’s image, implement an anti-government agenda and put the government in a difficult position. They allegedly organized a gathering with the aim of creating disorder by chanting slogans against the government and the state.
The case statement alleges that the procession participants detonated crude bombs at the scene and in nearby areas, creating panic among the public. It also states that when police attempted to disperse them, the participants threw crude bombs at the police to spread panic. Police seized five crude bombs.
Sub Inspector Md Mahbub Hossain of Gulshan Police Station filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act. A total of 118 people were named in the case, while 80 to 100 unidentified people were also accused.
