Former Netrokona MP Ruhi arrested in Dhaka

Mustaque Ahmed Ruhi, a former lawmaker from the Awami League government that was ousted during the student public uprising, has been arrested.
Police said the former lawmaker from the Netrokona 1 constituency was arrested from a house on Iqbal Road in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Wednesday afternoon.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Ibne Mizan said Mustaque Ahmed Ruhi faces several cases. He had been in hiding since August 5, 2024.
Many leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, have faced cases over allegations of killing and torture during the July movement in 2024. Some of the party’s lawmakers have been arrested and are in jail while others remain in hiding.
Mustaque Ahmed Ruhi was elected as a lawmaker from the Netrokona 1 constituency on an Awami League ticket in 2008. He was also elected as a lawmaker in the 12th national parliamentary election in 2024. After the Awami League government fell during the uprising that year and parliament was dissolved, Ruhi, like other lawmakers, lost his parliamentary seat.
After his arrest, Ruhi was taken to Mohammadpur Police Station. Officer in Charge Abdul Halim said legal procedures including questioning Ruhi are underway.
